The Nimble Pembroke Welsh Corgi

If you are looking for a small dog with good stature and has a big heart, consider the pembroke welsh corgi! This little dog was developed to work on farms herding. This was breed into them and is now instinctual. They have a great history that revolved around adapting to their surroundings and doing what needed to be done.

The Romans were the first people to name the different dog breeds according to their working ability. Back in the tenth century, people were only allowed to own any other size of dogs, than small, for pest control. They were required to dock the tails on their dogs. Which is were that originated from. The lack of tail distinguishes the pembroke welsh corgi from all of the other corgi breeds.

I have already mentioned that the corgi was breed for two reasons. Herding small animals and pest control. This is not the only traits that are loved of the corgi. They are very strong and intelligent animals. They are a great family dog due to their lack of backwardness and they are great at the agility competitions. The pembroke welsh corgi agility has long been revered at every one of the AKC shows. This is due to their amazing speed and their ability to get in and under small places.

According to the AKC, the pembroke welsh corgi should stand ten to twelve inches and not weigh more than thirty pounds. They have a coat that should be about medium length and thick. This is good for just about any weather condition. Unfoutunately this means seasonal shedding and an undercoat that can make them all look very different from one another. Regular brushing of the dog will keep it from getting the hair all over the floor! The eyes on the pembroke welsh corgi are small and black like a fox. The colors are usually red, sable, fawn or black and tan.

Due to their herding nature they tend to be what we call “ankle bitters” and may do this with humans they do not know. To prevent this they require training to stop it from the puppy stage. They also need to be taught not to bark, because they tend to sound an alarm for you.

All and all they are a great breed for a family dog. They will never bore you or cease to amaze you. Plus they are just down right adorable!
